For our seventh month, we are looking at the old Jack Petchey Foundation pamphlets and leaflets – a time before social media and before the Foundation had really entered the digital sphere!
Context of Objects
Although the Jack Petchey Foundation was online from the early days, physical leaflets and pamphlets were produced as a main method to engage young people and raise awareness of the Foundation. The leaflets were an important way to learn about the Achievement Award Scheme, as well as other programmes and grants that the Foundation supported. They help us track the number of awards granted throughout the years and any changes that have been made, as well as the style of language and techniques used to engage and inform young people.
Not only were these pamphlets informative, but they were also one method in which organisations could apply for schemes and grants, and a way for young people to be nominated. It seems like a strange concept today, physically applying using a pen and paper, rather than online!
Relevance to the Foundation
The website has been running since 1999. This is a perfect example of how forward-thinking Sir Jack Petchey and the Foundation has always been, including having young people at the forefront in this strategy. In 2015 (when Sir Jack was 89) he sent a memo out asking if JPF was on Instagram, and if not then it certainly should be!
As the Foundation evolved, so did its methods of engagement– reaching a wider audience, making it easy and accessible to apply, and therefore fulfilling the vision of the Jack Petchey Foundation.
