Logan’s Environmental Journey

Logan’s Environmental Journey

We are always excited to discover inspiring stories involving young individuals! This blog post is from Logan, a recent Jack Petchey Environmental Award winner who has a passion for farming and agriculture!

About Me

Hello, my name is Logan and I am a 12 year old from London.

My Achievement Award

I recently was nominated by Wellgate Community Farm and won the Jack Petchey Environmental Award. Lesley, the Co- Manager at Wellgate Community Farm, and the young farmers arranged a community litter picking day and the day finished with cake. The plan is for it to be a regular community event.

My Passions

I am interested in farming/agriculture and I love animals. That’s why I am a young farmer at Wellgate Community Farm. Many people would call it a hobby but for me it is more of a passion. I also participate in scouting which I attend every week. I have learnt an astounding amount of skills from this. I really love nature and wildlife and have done so since I was very young. I particularly like bugs, my favourite bug being the hornet (as long as they do not sting me!).

The environment and sustainability is a great concern for me and I worry about the future and how the Earth is going to be for my generation and beyond. I am also a trading card collector and enjoy, dungeons and dragons, Pokémon cards, yu-gi-oh and a selection of other card and video games. I also love to read my favourite book which is Ready Player One by Ernist Cline.

My Inspirations

My inspirations are Chris Packham because he is a very active conservationist and is amazing at spreading the word for the earth, which is a huge inspiration to me. I have actually attended 2 protests he has been involved in and had the pleasure of meeting him. He actually gave me some good advice as I felt quite shy. It was “shyness will stop you from doing the things you want to do”. I try to remember this now when I feel shy.

Steve Backshall is also a huge inspiration to me because he highlights that often misjudged creatures are actually very peaceful organisms. He also raises awareness on conservation and the environment, particularly our water systems.

Charity Events

I have done a couple of charity events, examples of some of these was when I was 10, I did a sponsored climb up Snowdon which raised £160 for Battersea Cats and Dogs Home.

But my greatest achievement was an afternoon tea which was fundraising for the homeless charity Crisis. I did this with my friend Jacob. It was a long planning process but it was worth it because overall me and Jacob raised £500 which will have helped a lot of people get off the streets. I also help in the local soup kitchen at half-terms.

My Future Plans

My future plan is to use the money given to me by the Jack Petchey Foundation to improve Wellgate’s environmental sustainability. I want to install bird boxes because in the winter we have a very rich robin population. I believe that installing a bird box or two would really make a difference. I would then like to install more wildflower beds around the farm to help the pollinators in the summer.

I would like to plan a charity walk along The West Highland Railway with my dad to raise money for Great Ormond Street hospital, as my mum has severe arthritis and she spent a lot of her childhood in Great Ormond Street Hospital.
