Object: Video Footage
This month, we will be looking at old film footage of Sir Jack Petchey CBE speaking at the Jack Petchey Foundation events.
Context:
The Jack Petchey Foundation has hosted events since the beginning (though our award actually started before the Foundation was formed!). These events celebrate young people and their achievements, and the types of them varied from Achievement Award events to inviting young people for lunch in the office. We are lucky that we still can watch some of the footage from these events, and in particular a 2002 Achievement Award event, and reflect on not only on how the Foundation has continued to reach its goals, but also how it has grown since.
Relevance to the Foundation
Watching the 2002 Achievement Award event footage, we can see not only that the vision of the Foundation has remained the same, but also how the Foundation has consistently strived to achieve it. For example, young people have always been given the opportunity to showcase their talents and celebrate their achievements with their peers through performances on stage. The goals of the Foundation have been reached, for example extending the Foundation geographically and increasing the number of grant on offer.
Following the death of Sir Jack in July 2025, these videos now have another value. They allow us to witness Sir Jack’s way of thinking, his vision for young people, and his hopes for the Foundation. In these videos he encourages young people to be helpful to others, to be courageous, and be proud. He also encourages adults to acknowledge young people and think positively. These are messages that the Foundation communicates daily, and will continue to do so in the future to help others achieve them.
