Newham Music puts on Jazz Summer School

Newham Music used a Leader Award Grant from the Jack Petchey Foundation to help create a four-day summer school for young musicians in East London. This included a large-scale performance opportunity with the London Jazz Fest, and parents were invited too!

Children were welcomed regardless of their musical experience, to a free summer school where they were able to learn, play and perform together whilst meeting new friends and engaging in positive creativity during their summer holidays.

Staff at Newham Music said: “This offered a safe space for children to spend the day who might not have had anyone at home with them during school holidays, as well as those who might have been faced with pressures to get involved in violent, anti-social or gang-related behaviour if they were left on their own.”

57 young people attended the summer school, one said: “I don’t usually do a lot of music over the summer so it was good that I could this year.”
